It turns out that despite being our geographical neighbour, Brits don’t have a clue what to do with Irish names and are running to Google for answers. On the list of words UK residents find most difficult to pronounce, four spots were reserved for names of Irish origin.

Experts at Slotbox analysed average Google searches across the past 12 months to see which words Brits find most challenging to pronounce. The data is significant because Brits often mispronounce things on the best of days but you might find some solace in knowing you’re not alone.

From the fairly straightforward Omicron virus to the deceptively easy Aoife - here’s a list of the most common words and names Brits struggle the most with pronouncing.

  1. Aoife - "ee-fa"
  2. Saoirse - "sur-sha"
  3. Omicron - "oh-MY-kron" OR "OM-uh-kron"
  4. Kyiv - "KEE-yiv"
  5. Açaí - "ah-sah-EE"
  6. Niamh -"neev"
  7. Gyros - "yee-ros"
  8. Siobhan - "shi-vawn"
  9. Nguyen - "n-WIN", “win”, “noo-yen”
  10. Schedule - "shed-yool”
