Yorkshire nostalgia: Snooker ace makes vow to win in 1985... and does it a year later

Yorkshire-born snooker player Joe Johnson, then ranked 16 in the world, vowed to give up alcohol until he had beaten lager-swilling Canadian professional Bill Werbeniuk at the Embassy World Snooker Championships at the Crucible Theatre, London.

Joe said he liked the odd drink but his opponent, Bill, was renowned for drinking many pints of beer while playing. Joe went on to become surprise world champion the following year.

Joe, from Bradford, revealed in 2007 how his children taped over the video he had of him winning the world championship with a cartoon. He had sat down to watch it with his wife and friends but ended up watching He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. The BBC later gave him a new copy.
