YEP's Light Up A Life Appeal '˜lovely way to remember a loved one'
A woman whose father and grandfather were both cared for at a Leeds hospice is backing the YEP's Light Up A Life Appeal, which she says is a 'lovely way to remember a loved one at Christmas'.
Rebecca Leeming, 25, from Yeadon, is urging people to get behind the annual festive campaign which raises money for our Half and Half Appeal, in aid of the city’s two hospices - St Gemma’s and Sue Ryder Wheatfields.
Her father Neil Leeming, 51, and grandfather Duncan Leeming, 81, were both cared for at Wheatfields Hospice before they died and Rebecca said their end-of-life care was “second to none”.
She said: “The amount of support and care that Sue Ryder provides is life-changing for many people. My family and I have experienced the palliative care, holistic therapy and counselling services which have been extremely beneficial and helped with the grieving process.”
She added: “Appeals like Half and Half are fantastic because they provide hospices with an invaluable source of funds to support patients and their families. Light Up A Life is a lovely way to remember a loved one at Christmas whilst donating to St Gemma’s and Wheatfields hospice. It is particularly difficult at Christmas time when you have lost a loved one and knowing that you are not alone helps get through the festive period.” The YEP’s annual appeal, now in its 35th year, gives readers the chance to sponsor a light on a Christmas tree at The Light shopping centre in the heart of Leeds. The names of those with lights dedicated to them will be listed on a roll of honour which will take pride of place in the courtyard by the tree for the entire Christmas period.
The board is unveiled and the lights lit in a special carol service at The Light which this year takes place on Wednesday, December 6.
Supporters’ donations will also be published in a Light Up A Life column which will appear in the Yorkshire Evening Post every Saturday until December 2. Dedications as short messages can also be printed.
To sponsor a light, send a donation to The Editor’s Secretary, Yorkshire Evening Post, No 1 Leeds, 26 Whitehall Road, Leeds, LS12 1BE. Cheques should be made payable to YEP’s Half and Half Appeal. The closing date for names to be added to the roll of honour is Tuesday, November 28.
