#YEPleeds nostalgia: Angling for Leeds

AUGUST 1983:

And in 1983 the Leeds Junior Amalgamated Society of Anglers sent a team of lads down to the River Stour for the National Championships.

More young fishermen were hoping for a bite on the canal at Whitehall Road in 1966 at a time when the waters were beginning to recover from decades of industrial pollution.

In 1986 a Leeds man, David Birkby broke the River Ouse pike record with this 31lb specimen while Henry Pollard and Ezra Naylor were the oldest competitive anglers at Roundhay Park in 1984.

Anglers at Paul’s Pond were having a fish swap in 1974 when they exchanged fish with Bradford City AA.
