TO MOST OF us Yorkshire Stone is such an integral part of our cityscape that we barely notice it until it's gone.

But to thieves, it represents a valuable haul. They are stolen by the hundreds by rogues who sell these characterful and durable stones to people who want to gentrify their homes.

The loss of these distinctive flagstones robs us of our heritage and makes our traditional roads and streets somehow less special. So credit to Leeds City Council for teaming up with a company to help catch the villains involved and, hopefully, deter such crimes in the first place. We need to protect our unique features.
