YEP Says (Jan 13): Government must meet its responsibilties

The decision by junior doctors to help with the flooding fall-out during yesterday's industrial action will come across to the cynic as a clever PR ploy but the medics' commitment to public service, even when withholding their labour, should be commended.

Throughout the British Medical Association’s dispute with the Government doctors have repeatedly said they wished to avoid walking off the wards, offering to approach mediators time and time again.

And their cause appears to have much of the public’s support with poll after poll supporting the doctors.

Meanwhile, the council will meet today to debate the latest on damage to properties and businesses the doctors have been helping to clean up.

While the council unquestionably will have a role to play in dealing with the damage done to our flood defences and homes it should not be forgotten that the lion’s share of the responsibility lies with Whitehall.

Leeds is already wrestling with massive cuts to its budget and cannot shoulder the responsibility alone.

The onus is very much now on central Government to resolve the dispute with doctors and make sure that Leeds and other northern communities have the flooding protection that it deserves.
