YEP Says: Headingley party animals must be more considerate

headingley has long been the hectic party capital of Leeds, with its busy nightlife serving thousands of young people.

Most have a good time with plenty of thought for their neighbours fully aware that not everyone in the area is a 20-something party animal.

But a sizeable minority are causing problems. Leeds City Council, which is quite adept at cracking down on nuisances, says its noise team received 458 complaints linked to student houses in Hyde Park, Woodhouse, Headingley and Burley between September 2015 and May 2016.

And almost half of those complaints – 49 per cent – came from people putting up with the racket made by student properties in Headingley.

The council says it is treating this as a priority, and so it should. Dozens of noise abatement notices have been served.

Reducing the number of noisy parties is a priority for police teams in Headingley too.

We appreciate young people want to have a good time, but we also appreciate that other people, with young families or early starts, need consideration, too.

If these young people can’t - or won’t - think of others, then the council should step up its action to seize eletrical and musical equipment when abatement orders are breached.
