South Leeds residents say its time their area had a sign to pinpoint where its exact location begins and ends – which can often be confusing.

Suggestions so far include a steam logo, pints of Tetley beer or rugby posts, reflecting the famous sporting heroes from south of the city.

The residents, lead by community campaigner Ed Carlisle, announced the plan on Twitter, seeking inspiration for the design.

He said: “We want to make a sign that welcomes people. What should it say? Hunslet is historically the sister settlement to Leeds and is full of heritage with a great community spirit.”

Suggestions on Twitter include Matty Hebditch who said: “Make it the shape of a steam loco, as Middleton Railway is nearby – and also as a tribute to the world famous Engine Works. Maybe some rugby posts too?”

InchPunch Design @WallArtRockers added: “Do something completely different, something extraordinary, something unique that no one else has done!”

Mr Carlisle said: “We are planning to have it on Church Street, by Low Road. There has never been a Hunslet sign
before. People sometimes
don’t know where it starts and ends.”

Hunslet RLFC said on Twitter: “Great idea and we would be fully supportive! It could be the lion rampant, rugby posts or the great Albert Goldthorpe with all four cups.”
