Woodhouse Moor Hyde Park: What the law says on drinking and BBQs as sunshine sees crowds pack Leeds parks

Public Spaces Protection Orders (PSPOs) are currently in place in 16 Leeds areas and are designed to prevent anti-social behaviour primarily fueled by booze.

Leeds City Council has implemented tighter restrictions in certain areas including Woodhouse Moor, Headingley and Hyde Park - banning street parties, drugs and alcohol in public places.

While BBQs and picnics are permitted in public spaces across the city, these specific areas are also under a specific rule about rubbish.

The rule means that all rubbish should be put into bins - as shocking photos show litter chaos after crowds packed Woodhouse Moor in the sun on Tuesday.

There are additional restrictions to crack down on anti-social behaviour in the grounds of St James's Hospital and Leeds General Infirmary, banning alcohol, drugs or people refusing to leave the hospital after treatment.

The orders for some areas also require residents to clear away their wheelie bins - allowing them to only have them in the street at certain times.

What are the rules about leaving wheelie bins in the street and which Leeds areas are under these rules?

In Armley, Harehills, and the listed north west Leeds areas, people have to clear away their wheelie bins at certain times.

Residents only have them in the street from 6.00pm the night before collection and 9.00pm on the day they are collected.

What are the rules in full from PSPOs on the Leeds General Infirmary and St James' Hospital grounds?

Within the grounds of the hospital, people are not allowed to:

- drink alcohol

- take drugs or psychoactive substances

- harass or cause distress to anyone

- refuse to leave after medical treatment

- refuse to leave when not requiring medical treatment or visiting a patient

- do anything which may harm staff and patients

Are these the only bans in place?

There is an additional PSPO for Leeds city centre which bans people from putting up temporary structures - such as tents, portable shelters and other structures - without the permission of Leeds City Council.

The PSPO in Murton Close in Seacroft prohibits access to an alleyway at the end of Murton Close, LS16 6EX.

What happens if I break the rules?

If you break any of the rules which are listed on a PSPO, you could be fined.

The fines are between £100 and £1,000 depending on the offence.
