Met Office issues yellow weather warning as Storm Boelo brings 65mph winds and heavy rain this weekend

Leeds is bracing for a turbulent weekend following the official naming of Storm Boelo by the Met Office.

A yellow weather warning for severe wind is in place across the region from 12pm on Saturday (October 24) through to 9pm on Sunday (October 25).

Forecasters warn that strong southerly winds will sweep across northern England alongside persistent heavy downpours on Saturday afternoon, shifting to even stronger westerly gales overnight into Sunday.

Widespread gusts of 55mph to 65mph are expected across West Yorkshire, with exposed higher ground nearby potentially seeing gusts approaching 70mph.

The Met Office has warned residents to prepare for potential disruption across the region. Travel services across road, rail, and air could face widespread delays, with speed restrictions likely on train routes, potential closures on major roads, and restrictions for high-sided vehicles on exposed bridges.

Power cuts and loss of secondary services like mobile phone coverage remain possible, while householders are advised to secure loose outdoor items, as falling branches and minor structural damage like loose roof tiles could occur.

Northern Rail has already urged passengers to check their journeys before setting off across the weekend, with pre-planned schedule amendments and short-notice delays expected across local routes.
