Prepare, Act, Survive: Emergency services issue vital flooding advice to West Yorkshire

West Yorkshire Prepared is the Local Resilience Forum for West Yorkshire which is made up of the region's key emergency responders and specific supporting agencies.

The Partnership works to help communities prepare for, respond to and recover from emergencies and major incidents.

It has issued vital flooding advice and guidance today for the region as Storm Christoph hits.

Areas which are under a flood 'alert' should prepare by:

- Packing medicine and insurance documents

- Visiting the flood warning information service

These are the areas at risk of flooding in Leeds.

Areas which are under a flood 'warning' should act by:

- Moving things upstairs or to safety

- Turn off gas, water and electricity

- Move family, pets and car to safety

These are all the locations of flood warnings in Yorkshire.

Areas which are under a 'severe' flood warning should survive by:

- Following emergency services' advice

- Call 999 if in immediate danger

- Staying safe

There are no areas currently under a severe warning in Leeds.

A flood warning has been issued for Collingham as the River Wharfe swells after persistent rainfall.

Teams are monitoring the situation as further rainfall is forecast on Wednesday.

There are three additional flood alerts in place across Leeds, where residents at risk are advised to activate their flood defences and 'be prepared'.

Wyke Beck, Meanwood Beck and Wortley Beck

West Yorkshire Prepared tweeted: "Heavy rain will continue across #WestYorkshire today. If you live in a #flood area and are worried about your property #flooding, consider what actions to take now!"

Parts of the UK could see two months’ worth of average rainfall in just two-and-a-half days as Storm Christoph moves in.

The amber weather warning for rain in place from the Met Office is the Office's most serious weather warning and has been in place across Leeds since Tuesday morning.

Simon Partridge, a Met Office forecaster, explained: “It’s not a traditional sort of storm, it’s going to be windy but it’s not based on the wind strength at all, it’s really down to the disruption that’s being caused by rain."

Mr Partridge said the storm meant that some areas could see double the average amount of monthly rainfall over a few days.

He said: “Those areas that have seen between 50mm and 70mm already, the warning is out until midday on Thursday, so an extremely long period, but by then we could see up to 150mm to possibly 200mm of rainfall."

What to expect in Leeds, according to the Met Office:

Delays and some cancellations to train and bus services are likely

Spray and flooding probably leading to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
