Ignorant West Yorkshire drivers were stranded in flood water last night - after driving through road barriers in Wakefield.

Various roads have been closed in the town following heavy flooding caused by Storm Christoph.

However, some drivers chose to ignore the warnings and proceed onto the roads - leaving at least one person stranded.

Police in Wakefield slammed the decision to ignore blatant barriers, which have now had to be replaced.

The force said: "Various roads have been closed this evening due to river levels rising.

"Officers had to replace the signage due to members of public ignoring the warning and driving thru which resulted in a vehicle becoming stranded."

Many roads have been closed on Thursday morning in the area.

Hill Top Lane, Ryhill Southmoor Road, Hemsworth New Road, Badsworth Holmsley Lane, South Kirkby Hemsworth Bypass close to Beamshaw Roundabout

Stranglands Lane and Fishergate near the Golden Lion Station Road, Ackworth Sewerbridge Lane & Common Side Lane, Ackton Rail Bridge SMJ2-LN804 on Doncaster Road between Ackworth Centre Roundabout and New Road, Badsworth

In a tweet, Wakefield Council said: "A number of roads have been roads overnight following heavy rainfall.

"Please do not drive through flood water – there can be hidden dangers underneath."
