'Danger to life' weather warning in Leeds on Friday as extreme 70mph winds forecast

Gusts of up to 70mph are possible as the weather system moves across the north of the UK, bringing widespread gales which could pose a 'danger to life'.

The yellow weather warning has been issued for the period between 3am and 23.59pm tomorrow (7 December), and includes west, east and north Yorkshire.

The Met Office is warning the strong winds could lead to disruption to transport networks, with road, rail and air services possibly affected.

Travellers are being warned to expect longer journey times and some cancellations to transport services as a result of the bad weather.

Roads and bridges may also be closed as a precaution and some damage to buildings could occur, which may pose a risk of injury and danger to life from flying debris.

Power cuts may also occur, which could impact other services.

The Met Office warning reads: "A weather system will move eastwards across the north of the UK on Friday bringing widespread gales.

"Inland gusts of 60-70 mph are possible across north Wales, northern England, northern Ireland and all of Scotland, with gusts of 80 mph in exposed locations in northern Scotland.

"There remains some uncertainty in the track of this system and where the strongest winds will occur.

"Heavy rainfall may be an additional hazard across parts of northern and western Scotland."
