Temperatures plunged overnight with the first heavy snow of the winter falling in Newby Head Pass, near to the North Yorkshire/ Cumbria border - as these dramatic photos from Thomas Beresford show:
1. Snow comes down in North Yorkshire
This was the scene near Newby Head pass on Wednesday night into Thursday morning.
2. The scene in Craven
This was how Craven looked as gritters and snow plough tractors headed out
3.
Several inches of snow quickly fell overnight, burying cars and coating country roads
4.
This photo shows how much snow came down in a short space of time - three inches was measured by morning
5.
The gritters 'worked a treat', said Mr Beresford, after the roads were made, if not clear, then at least driveable
6.
The forecast is for more snow this winter, and there is a good chance of a white Christmas too
