'˜Waste not want not' '“ 40 jobs at recycling plant

A new recycling plant has opened in Leeds that will bring 40 jobs to the city and process up to a quarter of a million tonnes of material a year.

The 200,000 sq ft plant built by AWM (Associated Waste Management) in Stourton will sort recyclable items bought by the firm that can be reused in industry.

Leeds City Council leader Coun Judith Blake said: “We very much welcome AWM’s continued commitment to Leeds and it is great news that through this latest significant investment, a further 40 jobs will be created in the city.”

The company is based three miles from the new plant on Gelderd Road and runs other facilities in West and North Yorkshire.

Tim Shapcott, commercial director at AWM, said: “The Stourton facility acquisition is the result of a number of significant contract awards for AWM over the past 24 months, culminating in the need for greater levels of innovation and processing capacity.

“It is a key element of our continued expansion plans, so we are very pleased that it has been successfully completed.”

AWM’s engineering partner, Eggersmann, based in Germany, supplied and installed the new plant, while the West Yorkshire firm invested a total of £10m, with an additional £5m in recycling equipment and £2.5m in the latest collection vehicles for trade and skip waste.

The plant is licensed to process 250,000 tonnes of material per year, which means a total of 875,000 tonnes across the whole company.
