Video: Major warehouse fire in Bradford tackled by 80 firefighters

Fifteen engines were scene to Gordon Rhodes and Son Limited in Chase Way after an emergency call to the West Yorkshire Fire Service control room at 10.10pm last night.

Around 80 firefighters battled the blaze at its height, with the fire finally brought under control around 4am.

Electricity to some nearby premises was temporarily cut off and people were advised to close doors and windows due to the large plumps of smoke in the area.

Chase Way is now open to traffic again, but with limited access as damping down continues.

Deputy Chief Fire Officer Dave Walton said: “The fire overnight in Bradford has been incredibly challenging for crews who worked tirelessly to try and prevent it from spreading.

"However, as the building is now structurally unsafe we will not put them at any risk by sending crews inside."

Extensive damage was caused and the warehouse collapsed in places due to the heat.

Due to the risk of further collapse, crews are dousing down the remaining pockets of fire from outside the building using jets.

An aerial reach engine - one of four engines still at the scene - is also being used.

The building is made up of two storey offices and a single storey warehouse containing flour, seeds, herbs and spices.

Crews have been working with the owner this morning to salvage equipment from the ground floor offices, which were the least damaged.

Fire officers and the owner are also talking to a structural engineer about the future of the building.

Once crews finish work at the scene, the focus will shift to investigation work into the cause of the fire.

The fire in Bradford came less than 24 hours after a major blaze in Southgate, Halifax, which remains under investigation.

Mr Walton said: “It has been a busy couple of days for the Fire Service and I am very proud of the determined efforts and professionalism of all of our crews who have all worked very hard.

“Fortunately neither of the fires has caused any harm to members of the public or our firefighters.

“We would also like to thank partner agencies and blue light services who have also been swift to support us in our response to these large scale incidents.”
