Union hails '˜solid' support for strike on flagship Leeds-London rail route

A STRIKE by workers on the main Leeds-London rail line has received solid support, a union said.

Members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union at Virgin Trains East Coast staged the 24-hour stoppage in a long-running dispute over jobs and conditions. Pickets were out at key locations along the East Coast Main Line, including Leeds City Station.

RMT general secretary Mick Cash said his members had been “solid and united” in support of the action.

Mr Cash also said managers had been drafted in from across the country to “commandeer our trains” in a move he branded “the biggest and most expensive scabbing operation in recent rail history”.

Virgin Trains last week described its arrangements for the strike as “comprehensive contingency plans” and yesterday said that it was running a full timetable.

The firm also said the RMT had been given assurances on all the points that were raised at the start of the dispute.

Further talks are planned this week between the two sides.
