Tributes paid after death of much-loved figure on Leeds music scene

Sound engineer Martin Dixon, who worked with hundreds of bands at venues across the city, is believed to have died from pneumonia at his home in Scholes.

The 53-year-old father-of-two worked at some of the best live music venues in the city, including The Underground, Town and Country Club, Wardrobe, Headrow House, The Faversham and The Hifi Club.

John Morelli, director of Soundblast Ltd, which owns Hifi, said: “Devastated doesn’t come near to explain how everyone is feeling.

“We will not be the same without him. Those of us lucky enough to have spent time in Martin’s company will attest to what a lovely unassuming human being he was.

“Not once in over 20 years of knowing him did we hear anyone say a bad word about him.”

He added: “Let’s not also forget that he was also a good sound engineer too and I only wish we could have had one more chance to tell him so.”

Mr Dixon studied physical electronics at Newcastle University before coming to Leeds.

Son Jack Hirst, 21, said: “He was one of the most kind, easy-going people I have ever known.”

Bands have also paid tribute to Mr Dixon. On Facebook, Submotion Orchestra, said: “A brilliant sound engineer and an absolutely lovely dude who was a genuine pleasure to work with.” Thanks for all the good times.” Plans are being made for Mr Dixon’s funeral, with family, friends and colleagues welcome to attend. A benefit gig is also being planned in his honour.
