Tributes flood in as police Leeds murder probe continues

TRIBUTES, flowers and cards have been laid at the scene of a murder in Leeds as detectives appeal to the local community for vital clues.

Clifford Amoh, 29, was found with serious head injuries after being attacked at his home in Gipton.

Witnesses reported seeing a group of up to 10 people running from the house and police are keen to trace those responsible.

Detective chief inspector Nicola Bryar, of West Yorkshire Police Homicide and Major Enquiry Team, said: “It has been very clear from the large number of people visiting the scene to lay flowers and pay tribute, and from numerous comments on social media, that Clifford was a well-liked and popular man in this close-knit community. Many people will have known him by his nickname ‘Papi’.

“His family are understandably devastated to have lost him in such sudden and violent circumstances.

“I get a real sense that people are in disbelief that this has happened to someone who was so well-liked, and that people want to see those responsible brought to justice.”

Mr Amoh was taken to Leeds General Infirmary by ambulance after police were called to the scene at around 2.50am, but he died a short time later.

A 22-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman have been arrested on suspicion of murder and appeared at Leeds Magistrates Court yesterday, where officers were granted warrants to continue questioning the pair in police custody.

DCI Bryar added: “We are working to establish the circumstances surrounding Clifford’s murder, and the community has a vital role to play.

“Witnesses report seeing between six and 10 people running from the address and we believe there will be people out there who know who was involved. Those individuals were mainly believed to be black males, although one was described as white.”

The group reportedly ran across Harehills Cemetery and to neighbouring playing fields.
