West Yorkshire Police said they had received multiple reports of an elderly man walking along the side of the southbound carriageway.

The reports suggested the man had been spotted close to junction 38, for Woolley Edge and the Yorkshire Sculpture Park.

Police and highways officers have been called to the scene.

Drivers are advised to remain alert if travelling in the area.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact West Yorkshire Police on 101, quoting log 777 of November 6.

In a tweet, officers said: "Multiple calls coming in reporting an elderly male walking along the M1 South near to J38 - Officers from @WYP_RPU, @syptweet and @HighwaysYORKS attending. Incident 777 06/10/20 refers."
