"We are in process of the replacing the damaged pipe. The damaged pipe provides clean water to customers and is not part of our sewage network. We are not aware of any problems with our sewage network in the area.

"A road closure has been agreed with Leeds City Council Highways on Easterly Road onto Roundhay Road, with a diversion route along Oakwood Lane, Oak Tree Drive, Foundary Avenue. Our work on site has started well, and we expect the road to be fully opened on 3rd December."

Yorkshire Water were working on repairs throughout the night.

A report of low water pressure and loss of water was posted by Yorkshire Water on their live map shortly before 8pm on Wednesday.

The report stated: "We're really sorry but customers may have low pressure or no water in the area.

"We're investigating the problem urgently.

"Once restored, water may be cloudy or discoloured, this will return to normal shortly after and you can help clear this by running your tap for a few minutes."

During the incident, eyewitness Imran Mughal took to social media to warn residents to avoid the area after spotting the huge flooded section of the road.

He told the Yorkshire Evening Post: "It is just a flooded mess.

"It is a burst pipe at the junction where Continental foods is.

"It has flowed down to Harehills Lane where some cellars are submerged."

One social media user said: "It stinks! Cars are struggling to get through."
