'It was like a huge bang!': Fighter jet flies over Leeds skies - here is why

The plane - a Eurofighter Typhoon - performed a training exercise shortly before 2.30pm with a practice approach to Leeds Bradford Airport.

The £90m plane - which can reach a top speed of 2,495km/h - caused many residents to have a shock due to a 'loud bang' noise emitted.

Leeds residents took to social media to question the noise.

One said: "I nearly crashed my car it was that loud!'

Another added: "What was that?!

"I was so scared."

The Eurofighter Typhoon is a twin-engine, canard–delta wing, multirole fighter.

There are only 565 in the world.

A spokeswoman for the RAF said: "There will be increased aircraft movement for an exercise taking place from RAF Leeming from February 13 to March 14 2020.

"The Station will be hosting various aircraft including jets throughout that period. Low flying for short periods may be necessary, along with some exercising at night.

"We understand our responsibility as good neighbours to inform the local community of such events that are additional to our normal flying activities and every effort will be made to keep the disturbance to a minimum."
