Huge Mother's Day traffic delays on M1 towards Leeds with cars at standstill

Cars are at a standstill on the M1 on Mother's Day after a full closure was put in place by police following a crash.

The M1 northbound from J39 for Durkar to J40 for Flushdyke has been closed due to a crash, Highways Yorkshire said.

Traffic is now building in the area.

The crash was between a car and a van according to the AA.

Long delays are now expected while the incident is dealt with by emergency services.

The crash was first reported shortly before 4pm on Sunday.

Highways Yorkshire tweeted: "#M1 northbound from J39 #Durkar to J40 #Flushdyke There is a full closure is place at J39 due to a traffic collision. #TrafficOfficers and @WYP_RPU are on scene.

"Please allow extra time for your journey."

The AA reported: "All lanes stopped and stationary traffic due to accident, a car and a van involved on M1 Northbound from J39 A636 Denby Dale Road (Wakefield / Durkar) to J40 A638 Wakefield Road (Ossett / Wakefield)."

UPDATE:

The carriaegway was reopened shortly before 5.30pm, with the closures removed.

Emergency services were on the scene speaking to drivers about the possibility of turning vehicles around.

However, the traffic is now moving again northbound.
