Highways England said a technology issue meant the hard shoulder was unable to be opened as a separate lane as usual during rush hour, resulting in gridlock on the eastbound carriage.

The closure has led to delays of an extra 15 minutes, and motorway cameras show long queues of traffic around junction 27, as commuters queue onto the M621.

Highways England said: "We currently have a technology issue on the #M62 so we are unable to open the dynamic hard shoulder as a running lane.

"This is resulting in heavy congestion and we are seeing delays of 15mins above normal travel times.

"We are working hard to get this resolved ASAP."
