Eight miles of traffic and lanes closed after crash on M1 near Leeds

A pedestrian has been seriously injured after a crash on the M1 near Garforth.

The M1 near Garforth.

It happened shortly after midday near junction 47 of the M1 on the southbound carriageway.

A road closure was put in place between junction 47 and 46.

Highways England tweeted: "Lane 1 and 2 closure still remain in place at time and will be for approximately a further 60 minutes. We hope then to be in a position to reduce this to a lane 1 closure only."

They added just before 4pm: "Please allow extra journey time this afternoon if heading M1 southbound. There is approx. 8.5 miles of slow moving traffic back to A1M J45 southbound. Allow an extra 45 minutes on to your journey time. We'll keep you updated."

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "Enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances."
