2026 has been another year of change for Leeds and its transport network.
Work to the redesigned entrance to Leeds City Station is beginning to take shape ahead of its scheduled opening this summer, with the installation of the station’s new front steps, 'Welcome to Leeds' clocktower and two 21-passenger lifts from Bishopgate Street.
While in April, the new layout of the Dawsons Corner junction, which has seen the old roundabout removed and a new through road created, was officially opened to the public and was met by widespread praise.
So we pass the halfway point of the year, the Yorkshire Evening Post has taken a look at the city’s biggest transport changes in 2026 so far - and seven more still on the way.

7. Still to come: A656 Ridge Road Bridge rebuild
The A656 Ridge Road Bridge, between Garforth and Micklefield, is being rebuilt as part of the Transpennine Route Upgrade’s programme of improvements as it is currently too low to electrify the railway line between York, Leeds and Manchester. The road will remain closed until December 4. | Jonathan Gawthorpe

8. Completed: Dewsbury Road and Tempest Road
Work aimed at improving safety at the junction of A653 Dewsbury Road and Tempest Road in Hunslet has been completed. Contractors have now closed the central reservation gap, to prevent dangerous turning movements, and simplified the junction layout to make it safer for all road users. | LCC

9. Still to come: Austhorpe Lane railway bridge rebuild
Much like the A656 Ridge Road, Austhorpe Lane railway bridge in Cross Gates is being rebuilt as part of the Transpennine Route Upgrade’s programme of improvements as it is currently too low to electrify the railway line between York, Leeds and Manchester. The road will remain closed until January 15, 2027. | Gerard Binks

10. Still to come: A660 improvements
The final phase of works on the A660 in Headingley got underway last month. As part of the final phase of works, Cliff Road will become one-way southbound to motor vehicles, with a banned right turn out onto the A660, Rampart Road will have a right-turn out ban, and Clarendon Road will have the left-turn out banned for drivers. Cycle lanes will also be installed. | LCC

11. Still to come: Pepper Road bridge rebuild
The 132-year-old Pepper Road Bridge in Hunslet will be partially demolished with sections of the Victorian structure set to be removed and replaced as part of a £3.2m improvement plan to replace a damaged bridge plate, and strengthen the historic structure. Unrelated to the TRU upgrade, work is expected to be completed in late November 2026. | Network Rail
