Thief bit man and violently stole £4,000 wristwatch near Leeds city centre hotel

Shams-eldin Twaty was jailed for six and a half years over the attack and a second robbery in which a victim was robbed of a high-value mobile phone.

A jury heard Twaty, 27, and another man targeted the first victim in October 2016 as he walked along Sovereign Street in the early hours of the morning.

The victim had been selected as the robbers had noticed he was wearing an Omega Seamaster watch worth £4,000.

Leeds Crown Court was told the victim was knocked to the ground and suffered injuries to has face and wrist from being bitten and having the watch ripped from him.

Twaty and the other man struck again in Leeds city centre a month later.

They targeted a man who had been out drinking.

The victim was violently attacked before being robbed of the phone.

Tawty, of Maybush Road, Wakefield, was found guilty of two offences of robbery after a trial.

A court heard Twaty’s accomplice had already been convicted of robbery and is serving a five-year sentence.

At the time of the offences Twaty was the subject of a suspended prison sentence for conspiracy to steal.

The court heard Twaty was part of a gang which travelled from Leeds to Newcastle to steal mobile phone from people as they enjoyed a night out.

Recorder Richard Woolfall told Twaty: “You were targeting people in drink on a night out.

“There was a significant degree of planning.”
