Eyewitnesses said the fire broke out in a private field in between the park and the Bramley Park Academy school.

Natasha Meek, 21, from Bramley, said: "We were just sat having a picnic when all of a sudden a big cloud of smoke came over us.

"A few people and a runner had to dodge of the trail of smoke.

"My boyfriend called called 999 at about 1pm but it must have been hard for them to get there because it's on private land.

"It seemed to be a wildfire of sorts."

Gabriel Colbeck, 21, added: "The smoke was really thick and made you cough.

"The fire was really bad for about 40 minutes but the firefighters seem to have put it out.

"We are all pretty shocked."

West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue service have been contacted.
