Sunny Leeds snap is a winning picture

Scott Beaumont’s photograph, which features his son enjoying an ice cream, was taken at last year’s Leeds Waterfront Festival.

The picture took first prize in the Changing Faces of Leeds exhibition’s active category which was designed to capture images of some of the work, hobbies and activities that people enjoy across the city.

The competition judge was looking for dynamic pictures and entries into the contest included photos taken at some of the city’s carnivals and park runs.

In his submission, Scott said: “The image was taken on a beautiful sunny day in June 2015 at the Leeds Waterfront Festival in Brewery Wharf. I turned around just in time to capture my son about to devour one of many ice creams that summer. A moment later it was gone.”

The contest drew entries from more than 500 local amateur snappers. A team from Leeds City Museum then chose a selection to appear in the final display.

Commenting on Scott’s submission, the judge said: “We all remember having a 99 Flake as kids. This is captured at the opportune moment by Scott.”

The Changing Faces of Leeds exhibition, which runs until June 5 at Leeds City Museum and includes workshops and events, features a series of pictures which capture generations of people who have lived or worked in the city.

Councillor Judith Blake, leader of Leeds City Council, said: “With our bid to be named European Capital of Culture 2023 gathering pace, we’re determined that everyone has the opportunity to feel part of culture in Leeds, and this exhibition typifies that ambition perfectly.”
