What do you get if you combine French farce with Bollywood exuberance? A cup of spicy theatrical chai.

Comedian, novelist, playwright and The Young Ones actor Nigel Planer has reimagined Pierre de Marivaux’s classic French farce The Game of Love and Chance for the 21st century as The Game of Love and Chai.

Transporting the story of a betrothal in 1730s France to modern-day London, the play sees a modern Asian family in England grapple with love and marriage.

Nigel said “I’ve been hooked on Indian cinema since 1973. I love its range, its daring and its ridiculous sense of fun. So, when I came across Marivaux’s play - a mistaken identity comedy about the foolish things we do when we fall in love - the connection seemed obvious.”

The Game of Love and Chai plays at West Yorkshire Playhouse’s Courtyard Theatre from Tuesday, May 1 to Saturday, May 5. Call 0113 213 7700 or book online wyp.org.uk.
