Royal visit to Leeds's Royal Armouries

The Earl of Wessex visited Royal Armouries in Clarence Dock yesterday (March 8) for a special tour of the museum.

Staff and visitors waited patiently as Prince Edward and his entourage arrived at the museum before he was led through its exhibitions by Dr Edward Impey, Master of the Armouries. He was shown a range of medieval weapons and armour before three actors brought history to life by performing a 15th century combat demonstration live, wielding two-handed swords.

After the performance, the Prince spoke with the actors and asked them about the weapons.

Andy Deane, Living History Officer at the Royal Armouries who performed in the demonstration, said: “After the demonstration, when I lifted my eyes and looked towards His Royal Highness, he had the same glee that most people who come here do.

“He was very interested, so it made the conversation very easy. He seemed to really enjoy it.

“You are told that he probably won’t speak to you but for him to do that and have a genuine interest was lovely.”

Dr Impey said: “The Royal Armouries holds one of the finest collections of arms and armour in the world and we are delighted to welcome The Earl of Wessex to our headquarters in the heart of Leeds.

The museum is a leading

offering a programme of 
lively daily performances and talks.”

A plaque commemorating the Prince’s visit to the Royal Armouries was also unveiled before he left.
