Powerful tributes to honour First World War centenary at Royal Armouries in Leeds

Powerful tributes through performance drama have seen crowds gather at the Royal Armouries in Leeds to commemorate the centenary of the First World War.

From Factory to Frontline, which continues tomorrow, sees a team use drama to chart the journey made by a single bullet, from a munitions factory to the battlefields of war.

Crowds gathered to watch as a First World War gun was fired at noon, with soldiers sharing their insights with young people among those gathered.

This, said Tristan Langlois, head of education and events at the Armouries, was to honour the sacrifice made by so many people.

"The ending of the war to end all wars’ was a defining point in world history and the lives of all those involved would be changed forever," he added as the initiative was launched.

The weekend's remembrance will continue tomorrow at 11am, when hundreds of poppy petals will float down from the museum’s indoor balconies accompanied by a poetry recital.
