Rising prices, sorting out inheritance tax and rethinking Britain’s relationship with the EU are among the most pressing issues the Government needs to fix, according to Yorkshire Evening Post readers.
The 2020s continues to be a decade filled with problems as the cost of living crisis continues to bite, the prices in supermarket shelves keep ticking up, and the UK marked ten years since the Brexit vote.
Andy Burnham became the latest Prime Minister tasked with trying to tackle the problems facing Britain when he replaced Sir Keir Starmer in the summer. But with plenty on his plate, we decided to turn to our readers and get their thoughts on what the most pressing issues are.
Over on the YEP’s Facebook page, we asked: “What is the single biggest issue you want the Government to tackle?”
Here were some of the responses from our readers. Do you agree? Let us know!

1. No Leeds Datacentre
One of our readers responded, writing: “Pushing back against climate collapse and extractive technologies like cloud computing and AI. Investing in renewable energy which creates real jobs and protects our future, not backsliding into fossil fuels.” | Lana Conway

2. Fuel prices
This was one of the most popular responses. In one long comment, Neil Hollis wrote: “Fuel & energy prices, education funding, the NHS, social care, cost of living, tax evasion from the likes of Amazon... whilst illegal immigration and small boats do need resolving, there are bigger issues affecting us all in everyday life.” | Zedspider - stock.adobe.com Photo: Adobe Stock
3. Tax the wealthy
Anthony Ashmore responded to our FB post, writing: “Tax the wealthy, close tax avoidance loopholes and clamp down on offshore banking. Stop cutting benefits. Welfare not warfare” | ©marcin jucha - stock.adobe.com Photo: Adobe Stock

4. Sort rising prices
Joanne Dewhirst wrote: "Sort out the rising prices. (Reduce fuel which reduces cost to farmers, transport. And shops. There for reduces prices on the shelves.) And any politician found of lying should be sent to prison for no less than 1 year.” | Adobe Stock Photo: Adobe Stock

5. Cost of living crisis
Christopher Guest replied on FB: “Erm, I dunno. Maybe the fact that money is now worth absolutely nothing, the cost of living has exploded and nobody has any money at all? I know what will actually happen though. More tax.”
6. Increase tax-free allowance
David Butler wrote in reply on FB: “Fuel cost will reduce the cost of most things we consume and transport and increasing the tax-free allowance to get the economy moving” | Johnston Press
