This empty 1940s mill in Kirkstall could be sold by Leeds City Council and redeveloped
A derelict former woollen mill could be redeveloped after being put up for sale by the council.
Leeds City Council said the St Ann’s Mills site, off Commercial Road in Kirkstall, would be auctioned.
A council report said the mill was built in the 1830s and was rented out to small businesses after being bought by the council in 1970.
But it fell into disrepair after the last business vacated the site more than 20 years ago.
A sale would raise much-needed funds for the council, which must save more than £100m this financial year.
The report said: “The property is in need of significant repair which Leeds City Council cannot justify in the current economic climate.”
A redevelopment of the site could see jobs created if a buyer was found, the report said.
It said: “Redevelopment would also reinvigorate the area and enable St Ann’s Mill to make a positive contribution to the thriving local economy.”
Auction was deemed the best and quickest option for the site after it was deemed surplus to requirements by the council.
The report said: “The property may fail to sell. However, this is considered unlikely given the nature of the property and its lot size.
“Similar council properties with redevelopment potential have performed well at previous auctions.”
