These 13 libraries have been shut by Leeds Council due to coronavirus outbreak

It follows an announcement earlier this week from the authority that leisure centres, museums, galleries would be closed, with libraries remaining open.

But, as of Thursday, March 19, the authority has confirmed that 13 of its library sites have been shut in response to the covid-19 virus, which has now led to more than 9,000 deaths worldwide.

Libraries in Leeds that are shut as of today are: Gildersome, Whinmoor, Scholes, Boston Spa, Ardsley/Tingley, Holt Park, Farsley, Calverley, Oakwood, Aireborough, Chapel Allerton, Beeston and the Kirkgate Market library site.

A Leeds City Council spokesperson said: “We continue to follow national guidance around managing the impact of coronavirus in Leeds, and have taken the decision to close the library sites with immediate effect today.

“These closures will remain in place until further notice. We will be monitoring developments and following government guidance with regards to when it may then be appropriate and practical for us to reopen our sites.

“In the meantime we will be developing our online content and will engage with people through our social media channels. We would also like to thank all our visitors and staff for their continued support and look forward to welcoming people back in future.”
