Shelbrooke retains Elmet and Rothwell with big majority

Alec Shelbrooke paid tribute to late Leeds councillor Gerald Wilkinson as he held onto his Elmet and Rothwell seat with a mammoth majority of more than 17,000.

The Conservative candidate increased his majority, getting more than twice the number of votes as nearest challenger, Labour’s David Nagle, and also spoke highly of Conservative leader Boris Johnson.

Speaking at the count in Leeds Arena, he said: “I know that my father-in-law will be looking down with a big smile tonight.

“I would like to pay tribute to Gerald Wilkinson. David Nagle is an honest candidate. We always debate the issues and don’t get personal.
