£9m road improvements set for two of north Leeds's main roads

Two schemes, along the A660 and A61, aim to get more people using public transport, cycling and walking, and are expected to be completed next year.

The A660 Headingley Hills scheme would see improvements made to the A660 between Orville Gardens and St Michael’s Road, including a new bus lane, cycle lanes, and a new pedestrian crossings.

A report by WYCA officers claims the scheme will improve journey reliability for all road users by reducing journey times, adding: “The scheme supports inclusive growth through improving travel by enhancing the road network as well as enhancing the environment and green infrastructure, supporting better air quality, thereby supporting clean growth and climate change principles.”

The scheme is expected to cost a total of around £5.1 million, with decision-makers expected to approve work on a full business case for the work.

The report added: “The scheme is a good strategic fit with the priorities of the strategic economic plan and other schemes underway or planned in Leeds. The need for improving the public transport offer to match the demand for travel is clearly demonstrated.

“Upon delivery, the scheme should enable a more efficient public transport network and cycling route, both of which should reduce air pollution in the area.”

The A660 project is expected to be completed by November 2021, if it is given the go-ahead.

Meanwhile, the A61 North scheme is set to include priority measures for walking and cycling along the A61 corridor, between Potternewton Lane and Harewood Junction.

Work on that scheme will be carried out in four separate stages: on Moortown Corner, Potternewton Lane, Wigton Lane and Harewood.

The A61 work, expected to cost £4.4 million, is expected to be completed by March 2021.

The meeting of the WYCA investment committee will take place on Tuesday, September 1.
