It follows a weekend in which thousands of Leeds fans took to the streets in both Elland Road and Millenium Square, leaving masses of litter and sparking worries about the possible transmission of Covid-19.

It was also revealed that official civic celebrations to mark the promotion, while they wouldn’t take place for the foreseeable future, would include a parade and reception in the city.

Speaking at an online press conference, Leeds City Council leader Judith Blake (Lab) said: “It gives me enormous pleasure to be able to talk about the success of Leeds United. I am sure you’re all aware it’s been a long time coming – we have all been refusing to express the potential for their success.

“We have been putting out very strong messages urging fans to be restrained if at all possible.

“Around Leeds on Friday night, people were celebrating in their own gardens and own communities. A lot of fireworks were going off across the city. We want to join with Leeds United themselves who have put out strong messages today urging fans to stay at home, watch the game on TV and celebrate with their friends and stay safe.

“The most important thing we can do is make sure people stay as safe as possible. There is a strong message from us around that.

The council’s chief executive Tom Riordan, a self-proclaimed Middlesbrough fan, added: “I am absolutely delighted, showing even Middlesbrough fans can be delighted that Leeds have got promoted. It’s a great moment for the city.

“Fans trying to stay at home to enjoy the game if possible would be helpful from the city’s point of view.”

Coun Blake also gave an update on eventual civic promotion celebrations, adding: “It’s disappointing to us that we are not able to do the usual honours in terms of the usual celebrations we would have put on if times were normal.

“We have made a commitment that as soon as restrictions enable us and are lifted, we will do the usual honours in terms of a parade reception and really make sure everyone in the city has the opportunity to fully recognise those achievements.”
