Leeds United civic celebration ‘simply not possible’ at the moment, claims council

Marcelo Bielsa’s side clinched the Championship title over the weekend, meaning a return to the top flight of English football after a 16-year absence and a first piece of silverware in 28 years.

The promotion and subsequent title win sparked wild celebrations at both Elland Road and Millenium Square over the weekend, such was fans’ excitement at the prospect of taking on the likes of Manchester United and Liverpool next season.

But the council has claimed that while the title win will be celebrated ‘as soon as it is safe to do so’, it was currently impossible to organise one due to it being unclear as to when the coronavirus pandemic will end.

A council spokesman said: “We are absolutely delighted with Leeds United’s promotion to the Premier League and are extremely disappointed that the current situation with coronavirus means that a city-wide event, such as a parade, is simply not possible at this time.

“We would like to reassure fans that, as soon as it is safe to do so, Leeds United’s promotion will be marked in a way that recognises the team’s fantastic achievement and this will include a Civic Reception.

“Until then, we ask people to please stay safe and look after themselves and each other.”
