A former social club in Leeds is set to bought by the company behind a neighbouring housing development.

The sale of Leeds Postal Sports Association Club in Kirkstall would raise cash for the council following a decision to dispose of the site.

The building is next to Abbey Court, a red-brick housing scheme for over 200 properties by developer Artisan Real Estate on the former Kirkstall District Centre site.

A Leeds City Council report said: “Artisan, the adjacent owner has approached the council and the postal workers’ club to purchase the property.”

The report said the council had already disposed of its legal interest in the district centre site to Artisan, but retained the freehold interest in land at the club.

A new deal with Artisan for the club would bring a further capital receipt.

The report said: “It will also facilitate the continued development of the site and in turn, the delivery of new sustainable homes in Kirkstall and this will provide better accommodation for the people of Leeds.”

The club went into administration in early 2023 but continued to pay rent on the site, the council said.

Selling it would free the authority of future maintenance costs.

Ward councillors, including Labour member Fiona Venner, were consulted in January this year.

The report said: “Coun Venner raised concerns regarding possible future use of the site in relation to planning and the impact on highways.

“Planning colleagues confirmed that a planning application would be required in relation to redevelopment of the site and this process would include a consultation with highways.”

Harrogate-based property firm Casa by Moda is marketing 223 family homes for rent at Abbey Court.
