A park in Wetherby has suffered over £1,000 worth of damaged by “senseless” vandals who set swing seats on fire.

The playground at Wetherby Town Council’s Scaur Bank site on Linton Road was damaged over the weekend.

A council spokesperson said: “Fires were set in two of the swing units, with the nest seat burned out and unusable. The toddler's climbing unit has also been damaged.

“We estimate that it will cost in excess of £1,000 for the repairs.”

Residents reacted with shock to the news, with one urging the council to look at putting up CCTV at the park. Another commented: “Once again dreadful behaviour by a small minority. Senseless!”

The incident has been reported to West Yorkshire Police under the reference number 13230588614.
