The proposal, if approved, will regenerate a derelict site and listed former school buildings on East Moor Lane in Adel.

Following a successful public consultation, developers have applied for planning permission to build 72 sustainable homes and an 86-bedroom care home.

It has been jointly submitted by two Yorkshire-based businesses, developers Advent Developments and care home provider St Mary’s Care.

The plans include 28 homes within the listed quadrangle of former school buildings, classrooms and a chapel.

There will be 44 contemporary new build homes, in addition to the care home.

The site is almost entirely surrounded by trees which will be retained in the development. The plans propose planting and landscape improvements as well as a dedicated woodland walk.

The proposal has been backed by local councillor Barry Anderson, who said the East Moor Lane site had been a "blight to the community" for many years.

And developers say the plans were met with "overwhelming support" when they were presented to the local community last summer.

Tim Reeve, managing director of Advent Developments, said: “The East Moor site and buildings is a real historic gem which has sadly deteriorated significantly in recent years.

“It is fully surrounded by mature trees which will be maintained, and we have responded to the wishes expressed by the community during the positive consultation period by incorporating high-quality design principles in keeping with the environment, along with landscaping improvements.

“Enhanced footpaths and cycle ways, as well as improved access to the Meanwood Valley Local Nature Reserve, are also included in the plans.”

St Mary's Care said the new nursing home will provide "much needed" elderly care provision in the area.

Richard Hoggart, CEO of St Mary’s Care, said: “St Mary’s is committed to delivering exceptional person-centred care provision in the areas we serve, offering its residents a market-leading environment in terms of comfort and care while they stay with us.

"There is an acknowledged shortage of care home beds in the Adel area and we expect this superb new facility will help alleviate that.”

Adel Councillor Barry Anderson said: “The East Moor Lane site and buildings have been a long-time blight on the community.

"We both welcome and support this high quality and well considered sustainable scheme which is exactly what we want to see.”
