Did you know there are rules set in stone by Leeds Council about how much taxi drivers can legally charge you for your journey? Don't get caught out after you've had a few beers this Christmas...

These are the tariffs which apply, and how they work:

Fares for Hackney Carriages set by Leeds Council

Tariffs 1-4 apply to taxis carrying 1-4 passengers.

These are the rates for the rest of the year excluding the festive period:

Tariff 1 - Monday to Friday, 6am to 5.59pm

For the initial 176 yards or 48 seconds: £2.60

For each subsequent 176 yards or 48 seconds: 20p (until meter reaches £6.60)

Then for every 195 yards, 20p until meter reaches £10.20

Then each subsequent 176 yards is 20p

Tariff 2 – Monday to Friday, 6pm to 5.59am and all day Saturday, Sunday, Bank Holiday

For the initial 176 yards or 48 seconds: £3.00

For each subsequent 176 yards or 48 seconds: 20p (until meter reaches £7.00)

Then for every 195 yards or 48 seconds: 20p (until meter reaches £10.60)

Then each subsequent 176 yards or 48 seconds is 20p

These are the rates for the Christmas and New Year period:

The Christmas period is between 6pm on December 24 and 5.59am on December 27.

The New Year period is between 6pm on December 31 and 5.59am on January 2.

Tariff 3 - Day (applies to December 25, 26, January 1, 2):

For the initial 176 yards or 48 seconds: £3.90

For each subsequent 176 yards or 48 seconds: 30p (until meter reaches £9.90)

Then for every 195 yards or 48 seconds: 30p (until meter reaches £15.30)

Then each subsequent 176 yards or 48 seconds is 30p

Tariff 4 - Night (applies to December 24, 25, 26, 27, 31, January 1, 2):

For the initial 176 yards or 48 seconds: £4.50

For each subsequent 176 yards or 48 seconds: 30p (until meter reaches £10.50)

Then for every 195 yards or 48 seconds: 30p (until meter reaches £15.90)

Then each subsequent 176 yards or 48 seconds is 30p

Tariffs 5-8 apply when carrying 5 or more passengers.

These are the rates for the rest of the year excluding the festive period:

Tariff 5 - Monday to Friday, 6am to 5.59pm

For the initial 176 yards or 48 seconds: £3.90

For each subsequent 176 yards or 48 seconds: 30p (until meter reaches £9.90)

Then for every 195 yards or 48 seconds: 30p (until meter reaches £15.30)

Then each subsequent 176 yards or 48 seconds is 30p

Tariff 6 – Monday to Friday, 6pm to 5.59am and all day Saturday, Sunday, Bank Holiday

For the initial 176 yards or 48 seconds: £4.50

For each subsequent 176 yards or 48 seconds: 30p (until meter reaches £10.50)

Then for every 195 yards or 48 seconds: 30p (until meter reaches £15.90)

Then each subsequent 176 yards or 48 seconds is 30p

For each subsequent 176 yards or 48 seconds: 40p (until meter reaches £21.80)

Then each subsequent 176 yards or 48 seconds is 40p

Tariff 8 - Night (applies to December 24, 25, 26, 27, 31, January 1, 2):

For the initial 176 yards or 48 seconds: £6.70

For each subsequent 176 yards or 48 seconds: 40p (until meter reaches £22.70)

Then each subsequent 176 yards or 48 seconds is 40p
