The soon-to-be new leader of the council, James Lewis, will take up the post following a full council meeting on February 24.

This is subject to a vote during the meeting.

She will continue to be a ward councillor representing Middleton Park until the local elections.

Baroness Blake said: “I am looking forward to taking up my peerage in the House of Lords and am pleased to be leaving the leadership of the council in safe and experienced hands in Councillor Lewis.

"We are working closely together on the handover of responsibilities and I know he will do a tremendous job as leader of the council.”

Coun Lewis has announced a reshuffle of senior appointments in his incoming administration, with Baroness Blake and Coun Lisa Mulherin making way for new appointments Coun Salma Arif, Coun Mary Harland and Coun Helen Hayden.

Former portfolio holder for adults and health Coun Rebecca Charlwood stepped down as an executive member recently, with Coun Fiona Venner – herself an executive member for children and families – temporarily stepping in.

In addition to his responsibilities as Council Leader, Councillor Lewis will also continue as the Executive Member for Resources.
