Hyde Park takeaway plan is blocked by council chiefs

Plans to open a new hot food takeaway in a busy Leeds student area have been blocked by the council.

Fears were raised over the potential impact of noise, littering and odour on people living near the proposed new business at Hyde Park Corner.

Leeds City Council said householders could be disturbed by late-night customers if a shop at 4 The Crescent, on Woodhouse Lane, was converted for food sales until 11pm.

Two objections were received from people who said there were already too many takeaways in the area and delivery drivers could block pavements.

Change-of-use planning permission would have allowed alterations including extractor equipment on the rear of the building.

A planning officer’s report said: “The position of the proposed external flue would likely result in an unacceptable increase in levels of odour and noise to the habitable areas of adjacent properties, particularly late at night.

”The impact on a surrounding conservation area and a nearby former post office which is grade II-listed were among the reasons for refusal.”

The report said: “The proposal cannot therefore be accepted in heritage terms.”
