Dawson’s Corner, in Pudsey, is ravaged by heavy traffic and delayed buses at peak times.

Now, Leeds City Council has submitted proposals to rejig the four-way junction, with a view to widening the approach roads, installing new bus lanes and pedestrian crossings.

A planning statement attached to the application said the road’s current layout, “does not provide adequate capacity for existing traffic” and that “consequently congestion frequently occurs on the approaches” to Dawson’s Corner.

It added: “The objective of the junction improvements is to relieve traffic congestion, bus delays and provide improvements for all users of the transport network corridors.”

If approved, the plans would likely see a dedicated bus lane put in both ways on Bradford Road, while the A6120 Farsley Ring Road would be widened with an additional lane on each side.

Meanwhile, the homes between 290 and 308 Bradford Road, which face straight out onto the junction, could be given a one-way access road with a “paved area”, to make life safer for residents, delivery drivers and binmen.

Bike lanes would also be installed on Bradford Road in a move council officers say would tie in with the Leeds-Bradford super cyclehighway.

A decision over whether or not to approve the scheme is likely to be made in the coming months, with timescales for the potential project yet to be revealed.
