Temple Newsam Golf Course: £580,000 contract awarded to build new facilities at Leeds mansion estate

New playground facilities will boost visitor numbers at a Leeds landmark after a £580,000 contract was awarded.

A learn-to-ride cycling area is part of the upgrade plans for Temple Newsam Golf Course.

It is hoped the scheme, which includes a new playground and landscaping works, will increase income from the mansion estate for Leeds City Council.

It is part of wider plans for a new café in the golf clubhouse, along with cycling paths which will link the course with the rest of the estate.

A contract worth £587,000 is set to be awarded to Horticon Ltd, starting in September and to run for six months.

A council report said: “The new recreational facilities will have the impact of increasing the visitor offer at the Temple Newsam estate, particular around the golf club area, and contribute towards generating additional revenue for the council.”

Leeds City Council said the scheme would provide new opportunities for outdoor exercise.

The report said: “These facilities will help contribute towards promoting active lifestyles, allowing people to spend time together outside, provide children with a safe space to gain confidence and learn cycling skills in a new area of Temple Newsam.”

Planning permission was granted in March for the project, also designed to boost wildlife on the estate, the report said.

It added: “New landscaping to be delivered as part of the works such as tree planting, grasses and flowers, will complement the wider area and provide new ecological habitats for wildlife as well as for users of the site to enjoy by complementing the look and feel of the new facilities.”
