Plans for Aldi supermarket in Leeds suburb

The early plans for the Aldi supermarket were revealed by Morley Town Council this week.

Members of the town council’s Planning Committee are set to discuss the proposals, to build a supermarket on a site in Chartist Way, Morley, today.

It comes after similar plans were previously lodged to build a supermarket in nearby Drighlington before they were withdrawn.

Coun Robert Finnigan, Mayor of Morley, told the Yorkshire Evening Post: “This is good news for local residents and I am also pleased at the new jobs it will bring to the area.

“This proposal is good news for Morley especially after the disappointment at Drighlington where a similar proposal had to be withdrawn because of site problems”

The proposals for the supermarket by Aldi are currently going through the planning process before a formal application is submitted, according to the town council.

But it is understood that the plans will outline that the supermarket will be built 
on Chartist Way’s Ravenheat site.

Councillors have previously met with bosses at the supermarket chain to discuss sites in Morley area that could support a new store.

Coun Finnigan said the supermarket, famous for selling groceries at discounted prices, would offer an alternative for shoppers living in the area.

He said: “Aldi are known to bring well paid jobs and have an excellent record of employing local people.

“It will also offer an alternative supermarket for local residents many of whom are on lower incomes.”
