Picture perfect location for Leeds students' work

The Red Kite Alliance art show will see 91 exhibits displayed at Harewood House for the rest of the summer holidays.

Jane Marriott, director of Harewood House Trust, said: “It is with great pride and delight that we are able to offer this high-profile platform for local young artists. The chosen pieces of work are of exceptional quality and they inspire not only us, but those who will visit and enjoy them.”

The project, which started in partnership with Harrogate Grammar in 2008, included 13 schools from across Leeds and Harrogate.

Students are put forward by their teachers and around 400 students have created more than 400 exhibits in its 10 years.

The artwork is professionally hung in the education suite of the 18th century Georgian country house.

Around 200 people, including 91 pupils, are expected to attend the opening of the collection tonight.

The schools involved are: Benton Park, Brigshaw High, Crawshaw Academy, Harrogate Grammar, Ilkley Grammar, Lawnswood, Malton, Prince Henry’s Grammar, Ralph Thoresby High, Rossett, Roundhay, South Craven School and Temple Moor High.

Ms Marriott said the championing of youth art was all the more important as arts subjects have come under threat as governments have focused on core subjects.

“We therefore wanted to assist the nurturing of a generation of creative and visual thinkers, to develop autonomy, observational and analytical skills,” she added.

The free exhibition opens at 6.45pm and will be on display until September 2.

Awards will be given to the best in show, as well as four runners up.
