People across Leeds had a flaming great time last night as the city kicked off its Guy Fawkes weekend celebrations in style.

Tens of thousands of revellers flocked to the annual Leeds City Council-organised public bonfire and fireworks display in Roundhay Park.

But Roundhay didn’t have the monopoly on seasonal fun, with council-organised bonfires also taking place at East End Park, Rothwell’s Springhead Park, Woodhouse Moor, Middleton Park and Bramley Park.

Coun Lucinda Yeadon, Leeds City Council’s executive member for the environment and sustainability, told the Yorkshire Evening Post: “The council’s six public bonfires are one of the real highlights in our city’s events calendar, and it was fantastic to see so many people of all ages enjoy the fun on the night and also the brilliant firework displays.”

The Roundhay Park bonfire was sponsored by the Yorkshire Magical Lantern Festival.

Taking place at the park from November 25 until January 2 next year, the festival will feature a winding, dramatically lit trail with displays boasting lanterns up to 20 metres wide.

The Middleton Park and Springhead Park bonfires were sponsored by the White Rose Shopping Centre.

Meanwhile, people planning November 5 nights out have been urged to make sure that keeping safe is at the top of their ‘to do’ list.

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service’s area manager for fire safety, Chris Kirby, said: “We want everyone to enjoy the bonfire season responsibly and we believe organised bonfires and firework displays are the safest option.

“Fires in the open don’t only pose a serious risk to the public, but they also take our crews away from other potentially life-threatening incidents.”
